The story of the Mint Julep
The Mint Julep is a cocktail steeped in tradition and was already very popular in the 18th century. It originated in the American South, where it was originally made with rum and was preferably drunk in the morning.
Since 1938, the Mint Julep has been the official drink of the prestigious Kentucky Derby horse race. During the two-day event, an estimated 120,000 Mint Juleps are served. This tradition dates back to the founder of the Kentucky Derby, Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., who, according to legend, grew mint sprigs in his garden specifically for the Mint Julep.
Which mint is suitable for a non-alcoholic mint cocktail?
The non-alcoholic mint cocktail, as the name suggests, is defined by the mint. Therefore, it's important to choose the right type to achieve the best flavor. Most mint juleps are based on the flavor of spearmint, also known as green mint. However, peppermint, Moroccan mint, and mojito mint are also suitable for this refreshing non-alcoholic cocktail. Ultimately, your personal taste will determine which type of mint you prefer.
Do I need a Julep silver cup?
Perhaps you've already ordered a Mint Julep and it was served in a silver cup, also known as a Julep cup. It not only looks elegant but also boasts excellent thermal conductivity, which allows the drink to be served exceptionally cold. However, a silver cup isn't essential. The drink tastes refreshingly good and is just as visually appealing served in a bulbous wine glass.
